To kick off the season the new Stevenage U13’s headed to Biggleswade for the first fixture. With the team taking the leap into the youth section comes new rules and much bigger pitch to play on, which the lads were eager to embrace, even having to wash and put on a shirt and tie after the game!. Stevenage where slow to get going allowing a strong Biggleswade back line to run a number of tries in early doors, but as the game progressed Stevenage came to life and began to show their competitive spirit and took the fight back to the home team. Some outstanding individual performances really showed how much the team has grown over the off season, such as the great breakaway runs by Ollie, a huge crunching tackle by Jonah that would make an All Black proud, the captain, Jack, very much leading from the front and getting the first score for the team, Roman storming around the pitch to make a number of try saving tackles and blistering runs, to an outstanding performance from the terrier that is Harley making some amazing runs and big hits to show that it’s not always the size of the dog in the fight but the fight in the dog that counts. The real jewel in the crown was the scrummaging, with the new rules allowing the push, Stevenage displayed real strength and dominance sending the Biggleswade pack backwards and winning several balls against the head. Where Stevenage excelled in the front, Biggleswade matched with their backline exploiting the wings and running in numerous scores. Although losing the game by a sizeable amount these new U13s showed a huge amount of heart and determination right through to the last whistle, never letting their heads drop and not giving up. An honourable mention must go to the three new players to the team that had never set foot on a rugby field before Sunday but really gave it their all and are great additions to the team, well done to Ryan, Bobby and Daniel.
Man of the Match was awarded to two players this week – Harley for an superb performance all round the pitch, and to Charlie R who’s dominance as hooker, winning all our own balls and most against the head was outstanding!
